Chapter 37: The World that Never Was
Rei meets with Axel, and he helps her reach The World that Never Was.
After Sora's battle with Saïx, Rin appears to attack Sora, but Rei defends him. She tells them to go ahead, that this is her battle to settle. Sora tries to stop her, but Rin puts up a barrier. Riku convinces them to move ahead, and they continue forward.
Chapter 38: Who Am I?
Rei fights with Rin. However, Rei loses, and Rin attempts to recombine and absorb Rei.
Chapter 39: What You Make of Yourself
Rei finds herself in a white void. She hears a voice call out to her, she turns around excited, now taking the form of her 4 year old self. She runs to Ventus and hugs him. She asks where he's been, telling him she was scared she'd never see her again. She realizes that the embrace is suddenly suffocating, and she sees Ventus take a monstrous form, she desperately tries to push away from him. He calls out to her in a distorted voice, asking why she abandoned everyone. Why she let everyone down. Rei falls to the ground, taking on the form of her 12 year old self, and when she looks up, she's surrounded by familiar faces from Disney Castle. Queen Minnie demands to know what she did. Max asks why she left. Mickey tells her that he never wants to see her again. Their voices begin overwhelming her, and she desperately tries to run past them. She is suddenly kicked down by the shadow of Helga Sinclair, who blames her for her death. She tells her that Maleficent was right, that she never wanted to protect anyone in the first place. From behind Helga, Maleficent's silhouette towers over Rei and crashes into her, absorbing her.
Suddenly the darkness is pushed away. Rei, taking on her current self, is being embraced by Roxas. She desperately tries to push away, scared that it's just another nightmare. Roxas tries to calm her, telling her it's alright. The darkness swells and tries attacking them, but Roxas counter attacks, not with the keyblade but with Rei's own blade. All the shadows combine together, taking the form of the Harrowing Wail. Roxas manages to defeat it, and the darkness fades away. As he turns back to return to Rei, she realizes it's not Roxas at all. She asks who it is, only to find that it's herself, smiling back at her.
The two separate, returning to reality. Rei comes to understand what she was missing and what Rin was going through. Rin continues to attack Rei, trying to keep her away. Despite the injuries, Rei pushes forward until she reaches her. Rei hugs Rin, apologizing to her for everything that they've been through and all the pain she's had to handle by herself. She tells her she's not alone, that she's there for her. As they hug, Rin is overcome by a sense of relief and comfort. Rin fades away, now rejoined with Rei. She collapses on the floor, feeling peace. She passes out with a smile and tears streaming down her face. Next to her, a samurai nobody appears.
Chapter 40: The Life She Never Knew
Rei finds herself in a bedroom, the sun from Twilight Town beaming down on her face. She's groggy, but hears a voice call out to her. He teases her for sleeping in. She says she doesn't want to get up. There's a rumble. He says it's not safe. The fight has started. She asks him not to leave. He promises to see her again soon.
Rei wakes up in a bedroom, but this time the walls are white and the room is barely furnished. Beside her, a samurai nobody. The last battle has left her exhausted, both mentally and physically, and is unable to protect herself even if she wanted to. However, somehow her injuries are bandaged up. The nobody offers her a potion to help her get up. She begins to explore the room, trying to figure out where she was. She finally looks inside the end table next to the bed to find several seashells and a diary. After reading through it, she realizes that she's in Roxas' old bedroom, the one he stayed in during his time with the Organization. There are a few more knick knacks in his drawer, probably from his missions. She collects them all and puts them in her bag. There's another rumble. The nobody motions to her, telling her that they need to get going. It helps Rei get out of bed, and she requests that it take her to the other bedrooms before they leave. As a thank you for helping her, Rei gives him the name Knox.
Chapter 41: Thinking of You
As Rei and Knox make their way up the tower, the are greeted by a corridor filled with heartless. Still weak from her last battle, her and Knox use her gummi board to fly around, utilizing the board's weaponry to try and weaken their numbers. At the top, she sees Maleficent and Pete being overwhelmed by the heartless, even darksides are surrounding them. She manages to save them. Since she is wearing her armor, Maleficent doesn't recognize her, but she notices that she's injured. She tells Rei that if she can't fight properly, then she's useless. She tells her to continue towards the top, and they'll handle the heartless themselves. Knox helps her up, and they continue forward as Maleficent turns into a dragon and fights off the rest of the heartless.
When Rei and Knox arrive at the top of the tower, they see a giant door and Kairi and the King desperately trying to open it. Rei takes off her armor and calls out to them. They're startled and are ready to protect her from her nobody companion, but Rei convinces them that he's there to help. Kairi and Mickey catch them up on the situation. Sora, Riku, Donald, and Goofy are past that door facing Xemnas themselves.
After a short while, the party reappears along with an injured Xemnas. Xemnas disappears and the group has and early celebration. Worried about how they'll get home, a dark corridor suddenly opens due to Naminé. Kairi and Sora thank her. At the sound of her name, Rei looks for her, barely able to see her and soon she sees the vague image of Roxas as well. She asks Riku if she's seeing things, and he reassures her that they're there. She gets a brief glimpse of Roxas and Naminé smile at her before the rejoin Kairi and Sora. Rei and Knox join Kairi in the dark corridor, but they disappear before Riku and Sora can make it through. Kairi in inconsolable Destiny Islands, and Rei is trying to comfort her.
Riku and Sora fight the final form of Xemnas, and are eventually reunited with their friends back on Destiny Islands.
